Chang'e, originally known as Heng'e, is the Chinese goddess of the moon. She is celebrated in poems and myth for her beauty; she has skin pale as moonlight, hair black as the night sky, and lips pink as cherry blossoms in spring. The myth she is most known for is the one in which she flees to the moon after stealing the elixir of immorality from her consort, Hou Yi, a legendary archer. She is often accompanied by a white rabbit who lives on the moon with her and acts as her cupbearer.
